Karita Häkkinen

Qualified Animal trainer, Special Detection Dog trainer, and instructor. Founder of International K9 Institution Ltd

Karita is an animal trainer with a professional degree in animal training, with more than a decade of experience with training and handling different kinds of detection dogs. Karita is responsible for training International K9 Institutes working dogs, works as an instructor on our courses and private training and plans training content for our clients’ needs. She also works as a dog handler for multiple different projects. Karita has pioneered the training and handling of bed bug (Cimex Lectularius) detection dogs in Finland, thus creating a new profession as the first bedbug detection dog handler. She also has several years of experience working with mold dogs and tracking dogs for missing pets.

Karita specializes in training professional scent detection dog teams and professionally used detection dogs for multiple different tasks. She is a well-liked instructor and lecturer both in Finland and elsewhere in Europe. Karita’s principles include accuracy and reliability. In addition, she emphasizes building a dog’s strong motivation as well as consistent progress in line with precisely set goals.

Karita has a long experience of working with detection dogs in work assignments. As a bedbug detection dog and mold dog handler, she has conducted thousands of inspections in homes, business premises, hotels, vehicles, stores, etc. While working, she always acts responsibly, understanding and taking into account the risks of spread in infested locations, and prepares accurate reports. As a bed bug detection dog pioneer, she has developed knowledge in the field and actively trained dog teams aspiring to be bed bug detection dog teams in recent years. The use of bed bug detection dogs has thus become an established application also in Finland. The bed bug detection dogs have been found to be an accurate and effective aid in checking possible bed bug infestations. In addition, Karita has trained and coached numerous detection dog teams for a variety of detection jobs, both civilian and governmental, conducted extensive training packages for those dog teams aspiring to the work field. She has also designed user trials, quality standards, and assessment instructions for professional working dog teams.
